Klamath, Northern California

The small town of Klamath, located on the beautiful Northern California coast in Del Norte County, is the headquarters of the Yurok Tribe.  The tribe has invited us to live and work on their reservation this summer.  With 5,000 enrolled members, the Yurok Tribe is the largest in California.  Many members live along the coast in the small towns north and south of Klamath.

The tribe's history and culture is rich.  Their excellent website is a great source for historical and current information.  The tribe has been very active politically in efforts to remove four obsolete Klamath River dams, an important part of the effort to restore the salmon population in the river.

We were guests of the tribe several years ago when we worked in Pecwan, located upstream from Klamath on the upper portion of the reservation.

We will work closely with the tribe's Housing Authority to plan our work in the area.  We have been given a list of potential cooperative projects, which include replacing siding, working on the construction of garages, roofing, painting and building wheelchair ramps.

Location.  Klamath is located on Highway 101 between Eureka and Crescent City.  Please consult our driving distance table when planning your trip.  Click here for a Google Maps view of the area.

Accommodations.  We will be staying at the Margaret Keating Elementary School, which has a kitchen, showers and ample bathrooms.

Climate conditions.  Mark Twain was quoted as saying that one of the coldest winters he ever experience was a summer in San Francisco.  The climate in Klamath is similar to San Francisco's, only a bit colder!  You can expect cool days with cold nights.

Type of work.  We will plan our projects in cooperation with the tribe's Housing Authority.  Wheelchair ramps, painting, roofing, and installing siding are all on our project list.
