Will Hess, Program Coordinator, Klamath Tribes Youth Initiative, Chiloquin, OR
The mission of the Klamath Tribes Youth Initiative program is to provide opportunities for Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin Band of Paiute youth to engage in positive youth development activities and connect with culture, education, recreation, and community service. Our tribal programs are committed to providing a healthier, safer community for our future tribal leaders and community members to grow up in.
“We hope to bring about a better understanding of the land and the people who live here, for all.“
By partnering with organizations like SSP, youth from our small tribal community have been able to engage with youth from other areas and walks of life, plus take part in hands-on community projects. As the Program Coordinator for the Klamath Tribes Youth Initiative, I appreciate the opportunity to share our unique local history and cultures with SSP participants to bridge the gaps between our community and visitors. In turn, we hope to bring about a better understanding of the land and the people who live here, for all.
“We can stay connected through technology and not let this difficult time stop us from providing youth the opportunities and connections they deserve and need.”
SSP staff and participants have been very respectful of our cultural views, and we look forward to continued partnerships in the community of Chiloquin for years to come. This year’s pandemic has hit our community hard, as it has for small communities across the country. Through all the challenges we have faced, we remain hopeful that because of the strong relationships we are building with organizations like SSP, we can stay connected through technology and not let this difficult time stop us from providing youth the opportunities and connections they deserve and need.
Editor’s Note: Thank you, Will, for your local leadership and for sharing about the Klamath Tribes with SSP participants during our online summer program. We look forward to our ongoing partnership!
